Become A Board Member

Are you passionate about giving back to your local community? Are you interested in making a difference in the lives of people who need healing, support, love, dignity and respect?

The Anawim Companions Society is seeking passionate, strategic, creative leaders with strong business acumen to join our Board of Directors. As a volunteer member, you will play a key role in supporting the strategic direction, ensuring compliance and financial sustainability, and enhancing the community profile of Anawim House and Susan’s Place as they continue to grow and evolve.

We are currently looking for individuals with varied experience to fill three roles:

Role 1: Financial Governance and Treasurer

What this person would bring

  • Senior-level financial, accounting, audit, or risk management experience

  • Comfort reviewing financial statements, budgets, forecasts, and financial controls

  • Experience with governance-level financial oversight (board or committee level)

  • Ability to step into the Treasurer role

  • Strong judgment and a disciplined approach to financial risk

 What this role is not

  • Not an operational finance role

  • Not responsible for day-to-day financial management

 Nice to have

  • Nonprofit, public-sector, or regulated-environment experience

  • Familiarity with government funding or compliance environments

Role 2: Chair-Ready Governance Leader

 What this person would bring

  • Prior experience as a Board Chair, President, Vice-President, or equivalent

  • Strong facilitation and meeting leadership skills

  • Clear understanding of governance versus operations

  • Ability to partner constructively with the Executive Director

  • Capacity to guide the Board toward a strategic, long-term focus

 What this role is not

  • Not an operational leadership role

  • Not responsible for managing programs

 Chair Transition and Succession Approach

  • Appointment to the Board under this profile is not an immediate appointment to the Chair role. The Board anticipates a 6–9 month transition period during which the individual would serve as a Director, with opportunities to observe Board culture, governance practices, and organizational context, while the Board assesses fit, leadership style, and working relationships.

  • At the conclusion of this transition period, and subject to mutual interest, the Board would formally consider and vote on the individual’s appointment to the Chair role in accordance with Board bylaws and governance practices. This approach supports thoughtful succession, continuity of leadership, and a strong foundation for effective Board stewardship.

Role 3: Fund Development and Major Gifts Director

 What this person would bring

  • Experience with donor cultivation, solicitation, or major gifts strategy

  • Comfort supporting governance-level fundraising responsibilities

  • Ability to think strategically about fundraising priorities and approaches

  • Willingness to work alongside staff in a non-operational role

 What this role is not

  • Not an event-planning role

  • Not responsible for day-to-day fundraising execution

 Nice to have

  • Existing donor or philanthropic networks

  • Capital campaign or multi-year fundraising experience
